What's going on?

After taking a bit of a break while the worst of the financial crisis worked itself out, the Ontario Progress User's Group is back with it's Winter 2010 meeting, casting a spotlight on developing using .NET technologies and featuring the first-ever appearance in Ontario by Peter van Dam from the Netherlands!
Peter's professional background includes development of the DWP framework which made  deploying clients to low-speed mobile clients feasible, followed later by a close working pre-release relationship with Progress on their then-forthcoming "Advanced UI" product and on follow-on projects since then. If you've got a .NET question, he can address it.

This meeting will be taking place on January 22, 2010 at the The Old Mill Inn and Spa as well as being available across the globe via WebEx.

Who should attend?

If you

  • are currently doing .NET development,
  • want to learn about using OO with .NET
  • are interested in learning what's involved in moving from a legacy application to .NET
  • are looking at using Microsoft's new Windows Presentation Foundation
  • want to make a application that's compliant with the Office 2007 UI Design guidelines
  • want to meet Peter van Dam in person

then this meeting is where you need be on January 22, 2010!

The Winter 2010 Meeting Topic Lineup:

After scouring the four corners of the globe for speakers with the depth of knowledge and experience that Ontario PUG members demand, the Executive is pleased to announce the following topics and speakers for the Winter 2010 meeting:

"Look! Office 2007"
Peter van Dam - Future Proof Software
The Ultra Controls for OpenEdge 10.2 offer the capability to create OpenEdge applications that comply with the Microsoft Office 2007 Fluent User Interface Design Guidelines. What does this mean? How can you benefit from this? Can you map your application functionality to this user interface? What are the challenges if you decide to adopt this standard?

In this session Peter will demonstrate how to create an Office 2007 look-and-feel for your application using the OpenEdge Ultra Controls and Infragistics Application Styling in OpenEdge 10.2B. In addition he will discuss some of the design challenges you will be facing when you decide to adopt this standard in a typical OpenEdge application. This talk will discuss features specific to 10.2B.

As an extra-special treat, the Ontario PUG is flying Peter in from the Netherlands to present in person! So bring all the questions you've always wanted to ask off-line.

"Where OO ABL Meets the GUI for .NET"
Shelly Chase - Progress Software
This session is for ABL developers looking to modernize their user interface by using the new OpenEdge GUI for .NET. Along with defining the new look for the application, developers are faced with learning object-oriented programming in ABL and the .NET constructs necessary to build the new UI. This session will demonstrate the Visual Designer with a focus on the classes that are generated, the integration points between the ABL and .NET, and the OO concepts essential to getting started with the GUI for .NET. Attend and get the GUI for .NET up and running fast.

"Windows Presentation Foundation and OpenEdge AppServer
"
John Green - Pro-Sys Consultants
Released as part of .NET Framework 3.0, the Windows Presentation Foundation is Microsoft's latest graphical subsystem for rendering user interfaces in windows-based applications. In this session, John will dive straight into building a simple window with WPF and then bind it to DataSets from an Progress AppServer. John will then discuss some of the benefits and drawbacks he's seen while using WPF in a multi-tier project, with the overall goal of increasing the attendee's knowledge about this up-and-coming technology among OpenEdge developers.

"Progress Legacy ERP Conversion to OpenEdge/.NET"

Dale Marthaller - Oppenheimer Group

Trausti Sigurvinsson - Oppenheimer Group

Brad Robertson - Oppenheimer Group

This presentation covers Oppenheimer's transition from a ChUI based system to a .NET UI platform, and has been updated with two years of experience and "lessons learned". It covers:

Initial project planning
Proof of concept
Infrastructure design / development
Tool development
Template development

  • Reports
  • Search Forms
  • Single Record Forms
  • Parent / Child Forms
  • Complex Forms

Software/ Control data Release system
Staged development / releases

For those who attended the Ontario PUG Winter 2008 .NET meeting, this is an update of Warren Bailey's presentation with the addition of two years of 'lessons learned'.  The Winter 2008 presentation was extremely well received, and the Ontario PUG Executive anticipates this one will be even better.

Speaker Bio:
Peter van Dam has been making Progress since 1985 and runs Future Proof Software, a Dutch Progress shop specializing in modernizing OpenEdge applications.

His experience ranges from CHUI to .NET and from SOA to Ajax. Innovation is his middle name.

Peter is well known in the Progress community as a publisher  of technical articles and speaker at Progress conferences and user group meetings. He is the author of 'Making Progress With Ajax'.

Peter has been working with OpenEdge GUI for .NET for a number of years now and is currently involved in three different OpenEdge GUI for .NET projects.

Shelley Chase is a development architect in Progress Software’s OpenEdge engineering group. She joined Progress in 1995 with experience in enterprise application development and object-oriented programming. Working with OpenEdge products, Shelley has focused on creating an open, extensible environment for development in OpenEdge as well as enhancing the Advanced Business Language (ABL).

Shelley has been part of the development, design, and architecture of many features within OpenEdge including ActiveX, Web Services, Open Clients (COM, Java and .NET), Object-oriented extensions to the ABL and most recently on the OpenEdge GUI for .NET.

John Green has been developing with Progress/OpenEdge since 1989. He has had lead roles in the development of various business applications and also with StarBase Corporation developing Roundtable. John is the developer of Proparse, and the owner of Joanju Software. John is also the owner of OEHive.org and one of that site's three maintainers. John is currently working as a contractor and lead developer with Pro-Sys Consultants, building 3-tier applications with the AppServer and .Net.

Dale Marthaller started in the software business in the late 1980’s initially providing support for a dozen different accounting / inventory packages written in BBx (Business Basic).  Dale then cofounded a software company producing and supporting Automotive dealership management packages for clients throughout Western Canada.

Dale has been with the Oppenheimer Group working as a senior Analyst/Developer since 199, and has has played a leading role in the analysis, design and development of the company's accounting systems. The Oppenheimer Group is a large international Produce marketing organization with offices in North and South America. Dale is currently coordinating the transition of the company’s ERP system from a Progress CHUI to a Progress / VB GUI based system.

Trausti Sigurvinsson started writing VB3 software while attending university in Iceland. After completing my degree in 1996, Trausti worked as a programmer gaining hands on experience in various languages and operating systems.

In 1998 Trausti did a 3 year stint in Holland and during this time made the switch to the Progress ABL.  This relationship has continued after a move to Canada, where Trausti joined the Oppenheimer Group in 2004 and became the first employee assigned to the ERP conversion project. Today Trausti is Oppenheimer's chief technical architect on the Progress/.Net conversion project.

When not staring at the blinking cursor, Trausti can be found either flying RC planes or cheering on my favorite soccer team (Come on you Spurs!)

Brad Robertson - is a Programmer/Analyst for The Oppenheimer Group.  In this role, Brad is largely responsible for developing the infrastructure code and developer tools used in Oppenheimer’s software transition project.  Brad has been working with both Progress and .NET since 2001.

Brad often displays a quirky sense of humor, and is known for having a dry, somewhat morbid wit about him.  When asked to describe his perfect day, he responded “Tuesdays”.
